Thunder

by Maggie Grinnell

Thunder the shy horse is anxiously awaiting his new owner. From what  his friend, the pink caterpillar tells him, the new owner is small in size. The caterpillar knows what she is talking about. She observes the owner who grabs the cereal boxes from the cabinet. The owner is a little girl.

So the caterpillar told Thunder that the new owner is a child. One day, the box is taken out of the cabinet. Thunder's new owner is an adult woman, not a little girl.

Thunder is not a typical horse. His hoofs are big, brown and wobble, like walking with over-sized doorknobs: his tail is flat as a pancake and small as a child’s thumb his eyes long and sad.

Usually horses are confident and robust, but Thunder is neither. He is
unsure of himself and everything around him and clumsy to boot.

When Sarah reaches inside the box of cereal and pulls out the stuffed toy horse, she feels drawn to Thunder, especially his sad eyes. Instead of putting Thunder on a shelf in her bedroom, Sarah decides to take Thunder to work with her.

Sarah Grift, middle length chestnut hair, in her 30’s, med build works at a call center. Most of the time, work is so hectic there is no relief. So Sarah has little things around her desk to help her through the day.

The next day at work, Sarah put Thunder on top of her computer. Thunder laid flat.

“This place is a lot brighter than my other home” Thunder thought as he observed his new surroundings.

Sarah loves having Thunder as an addition to her workspace. Just looking up at him makes her smile. But what is making Sarah unhappy is finding out that Thunder for the past few mornings has been moved into different positions when she arrives at work. She knows that this is the work of her evil co workers. What other explanation could there be.

Thunder is new to this world and doesn’t know the correct position to be in. He only knows to lie down on top of the machine.

Jasmine Flynn, short, mid 30’s, Caucasian woman feels bad as being a
Mom who can’t afford to get her little girl a birthday present. But for today, she put that worry aside as she brings Lisa, her 5 year old daughter to work.

Lisa is a typical 5 year old. Her brown eyes are curious and her long
brown hair unkempt. She hates to have her hair brushed.

Lisa kept herself busy while Jasmine worked with a client. Lisa sauntered over to each co workers desk to satisfy her curiosity.

One desk has a small stuffed Winnie the Pooh. One desk has a teddy bear with a red heart on the chest and a stuffed pig. The one desk that actually made Lisa stop at has a stuffed horse with sad eyes.

Lisa’s arm rose up towards Thunder as her eyes pivoted from left to right to make sure no one saw her.

“Awe” Lisa let out as her tiny hand squeezed Thunder’s stomach, bringing him down from the computer.

Jasmine thought Lisa was right behind her, coloring. So when Jasmine
swiveled around in her chair and didn’t spot Lisa there, her heart started to beat faster.

“Lisa, girl where are you?” she yelled more in a questioning tone than in a harsh manner.

“Here I am, Mom” Lisa said as she hurried over to her Mom’s desk.

“Stay here when I can see you” Jasmine demanded.

Lisa sat down with Thunder hidden behind her back.  The end of the day came. Jasmine told her co workers to have a good weekend, took her daughter’s left hand and walked out of the office. What Jasmine didn’t notice is that Lisa still has Thunder in her right hand.

Sarah noticed something missing from her desk, Thunder. Sarah squinted at her co- workers thinking to herself “I will deal with you guys on Monday.”

Lisa couldn’t wait to get home and play with her new pal, Horsey.     Thunder didn’t like his new name and didn’t want to get use to the sound of it. He couldn’t understand why the girl didn’t stick to the name he has already been labeled with.

Lisa’s bedroom was a mess. Tiny tee shirts were scattered on the floor,
sheets were rumpled and thrown halfway off the bed.

Her only toys were two Barbie dolls that have seen better days and a stuffed monkey with an eye missing on the dresser. Lisa’s mom couldn’t afford much and Lisa has gotten use to not receiving things.

Sarah went home having so many emotions. She is sad because Thunder is gone but is more focusing on her last emotion, confusion. Why was an adult woman missing a stuffed kid toy that came from a cereal box? Sarah just couldn’t comprehend that notion.

Meanwhile Lisa has already jumped up on her twin bed and started playing with Thunder. Lisa noticed Thunder’s legs didn’t move too well as she has him gallop across the bed sheet. So Lisa laid him down on her bed and went downstairs for dinner.

Thunder misses the warmness of the hard square object he laid down on earlier. Thunder doesn’t like where he is placed. There are two bendable creatures with long hair that didn’t look well.

Then there is a hairy animal with 4 limbs and one eye. Thunder wondered how such an animal can see with limited vision.

Sarah decided to put Thunder out of her mind until she deals with her co workers after the weekend.

When Lisa returned to her bedroom at bedtime, she noticed his eyes grew sadder.

“He will perk up. He has too” she muttered as her eyes fell shut.      Lisa played with Thunder trying to get him to interact with other toys.
When Lisa did this, Thunder’s legs went limp. Thunder just wanted to go back to where he was. Lisa is not a patient girl.

So, she decided after the weekend, she will return Thunder back to the
place she found him. Lisa didn’t want to see a toy stay sad.

Monday morning came and Sarah is ready for a fight. She will not leave
work till she recovers Thunder.

Lisa begged Jasmine to take her to work again. Jasmine at first thought
Lisa should stay home. But when she noticed how excited Lisa became, she agreed to bring her.

Sarah walks inside the office, straight to her desk. She secretly hoped that one of her co workers put Thunder back at his spot. But sadly, Thunder didn’t appear on top of the computer.

Sarah is going to wait till after lunch before she starts her questioning.

Lisa has Thunder in her book bag which also holds crayons, coloring
books, etc. Lisa walked inside the office with many emotions. She is sad to give Thunder back but happy that he will finally be home.

Lisa is watching Sarah’s desk waiting for her to walk away so she can
return Thunder.  Sarah around noon leaves her desk. Lisa knows Sarah will be gone for at least a few minutes due to her purse being slung on her shoulder.

Lisa eyed the place. Each co worker is busy doing something, not caring what is going on around them. Lisa quickly moves to Sarah’s desk. In her bag, she pulls out Thunder. She notices that Thunder’s eyes change as soon as he is perched on his spot.

Liisa feels good that she has made the right decision.  Lisa didn’t move as quickly when she went back to her Mom’s desk. As she colored in one of her books, she heard a commotion. Sarah let out a loud gleeful sigh as she saw Thunder where he is suppose to be. Sarah didn’t question her co workers because all she wanted was Thunder back which has happened.
